Souroti Sparkling Mineral Water 250ml

Souroti, established in 1916, is a naturally-carbonated Greek mineral water.

The carbon dioxide is naturally present in the water, alongside other minerals that have been shown to be good for hydration and general health, like calcium and magnesium.  CO2 is acidic, so this water has a naturally perceptible ‘sourness’ as a result, which early fans of the water felt was a unique and delicious feature. 

Souroti (Σουρωτή) is also the name of the town where the spring is located, in the north of Greece.

History and Corporate Ownership

Souriti claims that noblepeople and famous figures like Alexander the Great have enjoyed water from this spring since 345 BC. Citation needed! But use your imagination and picture them enjoying it. 

Ultimately, French soldiers stationed in Greece during WWI loved the water so much that the modern company was formed to bottle it and ship it back to France. A Serbian company also was set up in 1917, because people enjoyed the “sour water”.

After the end of WWI, a local resident of Souroti took over bottling operations. 

When the contract defining the rights to the spring expired in 1987, the town voted for the municipality itself to own the bottling rights. It’s kind of hard to tell if they themselves now own the Souroti company, or if they simply negotiate the rights to companies like Souroti. Interesting!
